This book presents an analysis of the concepts of female empowerment and resilience against violence in the informal entertainment and sex industries. Generally, the key debates on sex work have centred around arguments proposed by the oppressive and empowerment paradigms. This book moves away from such debates to look widely at the micro issues such as the role of income in the lives of sex workers, the significance of peer organisations and networks of women and how resilience is enacted and empowerment experienced. The focus is on moving beyond a victimisation framework without downplaying the extent of violence against women in this industry experience. It conceptualises the theories of empowerment and power which have not been tested against women who work in this sector combined with in-depth interviews with women working in the industry as well as academics, activists, and personnel in the NGO and donor sectors. In doing so, it informs the reader of the numerous social, political and economic factors that structure and sustain the global growth of the industry and analyses the diverse factors that lead many thousands of women and girls around the world to work in this sector.

Epicentre to Aftermath makes both empirical and conceptual contributions to the growing body of disaster studies literature by providing an analysis of a disaster aftermath that is steeped in the political and cultural complexities of its social and historical context. Drawing together scholars from a range of disciplines, the book highlights the political, historical, cultural, artistic, emotional, temporal, embodied and material dynamics at play in the earthquake aftermath. Crucially, it shows that the experience and meaning of a disaster are not given or inevitable, but are the outcome of situated human agency. The book suggests a whole new epistemology of disaster consequences and their meanings, and dramatically expands the field of knowledge relevant to understanding disasters and their outcomes.

Amma est le 7ème et dernier volet du projet au long-cours de Vasantha Yogananthan, A Myth of Two Souls, qui propose une relecture contemporaine du Ramayana. S’inspirant de l’iconographie générée par le mythe et sa prégnance dans la société indienne, Vasantha Yogananthan a retracé l’itinéraire emprunté par les héros de l’épopée du nord au sud de l’Inde. Amma est centré sur la princesse Sita et traite du concept de “pureté”. Loin d’être une fin heureuse, la fin du Ramayana nous oblige à remettre en question le comportement de Rama et son obéissance aux règles établies par une société patriarcale. En revanche, les croyances et les actions de Sita sont libres de toute culture. Sita signifie sillon en sanskrit, elle est la fille de la Terre. Les images qui composent Amma nous emmènent du littoral du Sri Lanka à la ville d’Ayodhya en passant par la jungle du Bihar, en Inde. Leur gamme chromatique recrée un monde où la civilisation disparaît progressivement pour laisser place à un espace purement métaphysique. Le Ramayana n’a ni fin ni commencement. Il représente le cercle de la vie et sera donc toujours là.
